It happens more than people realize. You invested in a Control4 system — a real one, properly installed, with a dealer who knew your home. And then one day you call them for support and the number is disconnected. Or they went out of business. Or they simply stopped returning calls.

Now you have a sophisticated automation system you can't get support for, can't update, and aren't sure you can even modify. It's a frustrating situation — but it's not a hopeless one.

The good news
Control4 systems are designed to be transferred between dealers. Your investment is not lost. A new certified dealer can take over your system, update it, reprogram it, and support it going forward — often without starting from scratch.

First, Understand What You Actually Have

Before panicking, it helps to understand how Control4 systems work. Your system lives on a controller — a physical piece of hardware installed somewhere in your home, usually in a closet, equipment rack, or mechanical room. That controller runs your programming, your scenes, your schedules. The dealer relationship is separate from the hardware.

When a dealer goes away, your system doesn't stop working. Whatever was programmed continues to run. What you lose is the ability to make changes, add new devices, update software, or get remote support. That's significant — but the foundation of your system is intact.

Common Scenarios — and What They Mean

My system still works but I can't make any changes
This is the most common situation. A new certified dealer can take over your project file, make changes, and support you going forward. The process is straightforward for any experienced Control4 dealer.
My system stopped working after an update or power event
Controllers sometimes need to be reloaded after firmware updates or unexpected power loss. A dealer can remotely access your system in many cases, or visit to diagnose and restore it.
I want to add new devices or rooms
Any certified Control4 dealer can add to an existing system. They'll need access to your project file — which either you have, your previous dealer left on the controller, or can be reconstructed.
My controller is very old and may need replacing
Older Control4 controllers eventually reach end-of-life, meaning they can no longer run current software. A dealer can assess whether an upgrade makes sense and what that looks like for your specific system.
I have no idea what's installed or where anything is
This is more common than you'd think. A dealer can audit your system, document what you have, and create a proper project file if one doesn't exist. It takes time, but it's absolutely doable.

What to Do Right Now

1
Don't factory reset anything
This is the most important thing. A factory reset wipes your programming and scenes — everything your previous dealer set up. Even if your system is misbehaving, hold off on resetting until a new dealer has assessed it.
2
Try to locate your project file
Check your email for anything your previous dealer sent — a project file (.c4p) is sometimes shared with clients. If you have it, a new dealer can open it and pick up where the old one left off.
3
Find your controller
Locate the Control4 controller in your home — usually a black box in an equipment rack or closet. Note the model number. This tells a new dealer what hardware you have and what software it can run.
4
Contact a certified Control4 dealer
Reach out to a local certified dealer — like us — and describe your situation. A good dealer will tell you honestly what's involved in taking over your system and what it will cost before doing any work.

Avoid non-certified "Control4 technicians" you find online. Control4 programming requires certified dealer access — anyone claiming to reprogram your system without dealer credentials either can't actually do it, or is doing something unsupported that may void your hardware warranty.

What Taking Over a System Actually Involves

When we take over an existing Control4 system, here's generally how it works:

System audit
We document everything installed — controllers, drivers, connected devices, and existing programming — so we know exactly what we're working with.
Project file transfer
If a project file exists on the controller, we extract it and take over from there — no need to start from scratch.
Software assessment
We check what version of Control4 OS is running and advise whether an update makes sense for your hardware and programming.
Room-by-room testing
We go through every room and every function to verify what's working, what isn't, and what needs attention.
Ongoing support
From that point forward, you have a dealer who knows your system — and answers the phone when you call.

I've taken over systems where the previous dealer had been gone for years. In most cases, the foundation is solid — it just needs someone to pick it back up and care for it properly.

Why the Dealer Relationship Matters So Much

Control4 is a professional-grade platform — which means it's designed to be installed and supported by certified dealers, not DIY'd or left unsupported. The irony is that the same features that make Control4 exceptional — deep customization, complex programming, integrations with dozens of device types — are also what make it dependent on someone who knows it well.

That's why, when we take on a new client, we treat it as a long-term relationship. You should be able to call your dealer five years after installation and get the same person who installed the system. In our case, that's always Rick.

What we believe

"The homeowners who call me will tell you it was me they met on day one, me that showed up with tools to install it, and me that continues to support them after the sale. That's not a business model — it's just how this should work."
